Evidence indicates that as early as the 8th Century, the "O Antiphons" were sung during evening Vespers. The purpose was to reflect on the prophesies of the Messiah in the Old Testament, and anticipate the coming of Jesus Christ in the manger at Bethlehem on Christmas Day.
 
Each day is a new prayer starting on December 17th and ending on December 23rd.
